Selwyn College students on West Guadalcanal had discovered an unexploded ordinance (UXO) whilst preparing the school’s seafront for its annual graduation last weekend.
The students found the bomb in the sand before alerting their staff and the surrounding communities who eventually reported the matter to police.
According to the Police Media Unit, on 9th October, a report of a UXO was received from a police officer who was informed by local communities at the Selwyn College area.
Police say following an assessment of the information, a team of two EOD Operators was sent to the location of the UXO at Selwyn College.
On arrival at the location, the EOD team confirmed the UXO was a United States 4 inch MK 10 Anti-aircraft Naval Projectile.
“The EOD team safely removed the UXO and transported it back to Hells Point where it is being securely stored awaiting safe disposal,” the Police Media Unit said in a statement to SBMonline.
Meanwhile police encourages the general public to report the sighting any UXO and not to touch, pick up, kick or play with it because it is dangerous.
You can call EOD direct on phone 7495215 or 7495214 or free toll 999 or report to any sightings to your nearest Police Station.
